African play wheel water pump showcase model

This model was commissioned by Rolls-Royce plc for a landmark presentation at the L.D.C. in Derby.

The model depicts the 52nd well commissioned for Malawi to bring a clean water supply to the local villages. The well pump is operated by a play pump – a simple kiddies roundabout!

The brief for the model project was to show the pump in operation. This part of the project was handed to a small team of RR graduates who designed and created all the mechanics. Besides the pump, the brief was to include a school building and the high level water storage tank. All this had be set in an African landscape to form a convincing diorama. The last challenge on the model was to populate it with scale African children. This completely brought the scene to life!

Presentation required the design of a sturdy plinth to display the model at eye level, as well as providing a clear protective acrylic case for easy viewing.

This has been the largest commercial commission to date that delivered both to the brief and, most importantly, keeping to the strict deadline.

Buildings for Derby Industrial Museum model railway

The buildings were all commissioned by the curator of the museum for the Midland Railway Model exhibit house in the Silk Mill, Derby. The models shown are created to 1:32nd scale and replicate originals down to every last detail, faithfully recreating part if the Midland Railway in miniature as it was in 1906.

The models displayed are built up from resin components, the masters of which were designed and created by Dovedale Models for kit production and easy assembly. The warehouse and quayside kit photo also shows the results of my painting and weathering service offered to finish your model to exhibition standards.

Back scene for model railway ‘Evercreech New’

“Having spent thirteen years building the layout I had a specific idea of the style of back scene I wanted. This was very important as I did not want the viewers eye to be unnecessarily drawn away from the model but at the same time wanted an accurate impression of depth. Also it had to be as accurate as the layout. Having seen many styles over the years, When I saw how Dave Wright painted them I knew immediately that his was absolutely right for what I wanted! Taking him to the actual site of where the station used to be he sketched the details and three months later produced a forty foot long work of art. I couldn’t be more pleased with the result.”

Layout design

If you have an idea or aspiration for a layout then I can interpret these thoughts and ideas into a design you can see on paper.

Using my draughtsman and artistic skills I will supply you with a three dimensional interpretation of the layout plan, giving you a visual idea of what the finished layout will look like. This is a totally personal service, working closely with you at all times. Quotations are given based on the your personal requirements.

To complement the scenics and structures I also offer a unique hand painted back scene service.

They are painted in either oils or acrylics on a good quality white canvas roll to any height or length you desire. I can work from the field or from photographs, just let me know what you have in mind and I will gladly give you a price.
